Ciao and welcome to ARoadRetraveled! Too often tourists think that a perfect day in Rome includes the “musts” like the Vatican and Colosseum. Having lived in Rome for more than a decade, I’ve spent many days in Rome exploring hidden gems and iconic landmarks without the Colosseum or Vatican added in. Actually, there is so much more to Rome than these two attractions that are always crammed with tourists and almost impossible to find tickets.
Spending a day in Rome without visiting the typical super-crowded Colosseum or Vatican may seem unconventional, but it opens up a world of possibilities to uncover lesser-known treasures and experience the city from a different perspective. With a carefully crafted itinerary, you can immerse yourself in Rome’s vibrant culture, rich history, and enchanting atmosphere of the Eternal City without committing to visiting time-consuming and challenging tourist attractions like the Vatican and Colosseum.
Here’s how to spend one perfect day in Rome, exploring hidden gems and iconic landmarks without the Colosseum or Vatican taking up most of your day.

The Morning of your Perfect Day Rome:
Start your day by immersing yourself in the lively ambiance of Campo dei Fiori, where the daily market unfolds with a kaleidoscope of colors and aromas. Browse the stalls brimming with fresh produce, fragrant spices, and of course endless souvenirs. While there, treat yourself to a fresh-baked pastry at the local bakery in the square.
Continue your journey on foot to the lively Piazza Navona, a bustling square adorned with magnificent Baroque architecture that outlines the oval shape of the square reminiscent of the former ancient Roman Stadium upon which it stands. Take a leisurely stroll around the square, marveling at the iconic Fountain of the Four Rivers, and soak in the vibrant atmosphere.
From here stroll to Piazza della Rotonda, dominated by the majestic Pantheon. If you’re keen on exploring this ancient temple, be sure to pre-book your tickets for a time slot you anticipate having to wait in lines even if you’ve secured your tickets (as the actual ticket lines are even longer and slower). Afterward, recharge with a cup of Italian espresso at one of the nearby cafes, such as Caffe Tazza d’Oro or Sant’Eustachio Caffe, renowned for their exquisite blends.
On hot summer days, why not savor a refreshing artisan gelato at the nearby Cremeria Monteforte for the best gelato in Rome! This tiny gelateria is located just next to the Pantheon. Some of my favorite flavors are rose, mango, and figs – however, many fruit-based gelato may only be available in season.
If you are standing facing the Pantheon, the tiny gelateria is located on the right side of the monument, opposite the taxi station. Forget all the other “chain” gelaterias… their industrial flavors don’t measure up to Cremeria Monteforte’s authentic artisan gelato made with fresh and in-season ingredients.
Just behind the Pantheon is the unassuming church of Santa Maria Sopra Minerva, fronted by Berninis’ elephant surmounted by an Egyptian obelisk. While the facade may appear “blah”, the interior of the church is truly a treasure trove waiting to be discovered – along with Michelangelo’s “Christ the Redeemer” sculpture.
Make your way behind the Pantheon towards Largo Argentina, a captivating archaeological site surrounded by busy streets. This site is famous for the location where Julius Caesar was assassinated on the ides of March in 44 BC on the steps of the ancient Theater of Pompey. Unearthed a century ago, the remnants of this infamous structure among others, are still visible.

Stop for Lunch at a restaurant or eatery in Rome
By now it’s time to stop for lunch at a restaurant or eatery in Rome. If you are short on time or would rather not dedicate time for a sit-down lunch, many eateries offer food on the go such as pizza by the slice or sandwiches (panini).
For a sit-down lunch experience, try the Rossopomodoro Cucina and Pizzeria in Largo Argentina or venture further into the charming Jewish Ghetto, renowned for its excellent restaurants serving authentic dishes. Be sure to try the specialties at Ba’Ghetto for a true taste of Jewish-Roman culinary tradition – and the delectable Jewish Artichokes that are to die for!
Your Afternoon in Rome
By now it’s afternoon in Rome. Continue your perfect day in Rome by strolling along the ruins of Portico d’Ottavia and past the Theater of Marcellus, soaking in the architectural splendor of ancient Rome. Once you reach the main road Via del Teatro do Marcello, head left towards Piazza Venezia and ascend Capitoline Hill which will be located on your right side.
Cross the square towards the back to a small terrace where you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the majestic Roman Forum stretching out before you.
From here, go back and descend from Capitoline Hill and turn right making your way through Piazza Venezia and past the grand Monument to Victor Emmanuel II. Turn right at the first opportunity and stroll along Via dei Fori Imperiali – a grand pedestrian-friendly boulevard lined with the ruins of ancient Roman forums on both sides.
You will walk past the Forum of Trajan, the Forum of Augustus, Forum of Nerva, and the famous Roman Forum. At the end of this boulevard, you will discover the iconic Colosseum. Stroll along Piazza del Colosseum and admire the Colosseum from the outside and the Arch of Constantine nearby.
If you’re still eager to explore, hail a taxi or Uber to the Spanish Steps. Right behind the Colosseum on the opposite side of the main entrance area, you will find a Taxi Station.
While at the Spanish Steps, you can climb the iconic staircase and enjoy amazing views of Piazza di Spagna below and the grand palazzi of Rome. Conclude your day by walking towards the Trevi Fountain, and tossing a coin into the legendary fountain, ensuring your return to the eternal city before bidding Rome a fond farewell.
Exploring Rome without visiting the Colosseum or the Vatican offers a unique opportunity to delve deeper into the city’s hidden gems and lesser-known attractions. From bustling markets and historic squares to ancient ruins and panoramic viewpoints, every corner of Rome tells a story waiting to be discovered.
By following this itinerary, you can experience a perfect day in Rome in a single day, creating memories to last a lifetime.
