Ciao and welcome to ARoadRetraveled! I’ve lived in Rome for 10 years like me and sampled enough gelato all over Rome to become a gelato snob. Amidst the plethora of options, one gelateria stands out above the rest: Cremeria Monteforte, the best gelato in Rome in my opinion.
Let me spare you the disappointment of falling into the trap of chain gelato shops that prioritize flashy displays over quality craftsmanship. Having made the regrettable mistake of venturing into these tourist-centric establishments myself, I can attest to the lackluster experience of consuming their commercial-grade offerings, which left me feeling underwhelmed and even somewhat sick afterward (all those fake ingredients and way too much sugar).
For me, Cremeria Monteforte reigns supreme, consistently delivering gelato of unparalleled excellence.
It’s not just about satisfying a sweet tooth; it’s about indulging in the sublime artistry of artisan gelato made from the freshest, most natural ingredients. Every scoop is a testament to perfection.
Why does Cremeria Monteforte serve the best gelato in Rome?
At Cremeria Monteforte, their gelato is crafted by experienced artisans, and made from fresh, natural ingredients, ensuring exceptional quality and flavor. I learned this quickly when I inquired about a favorite flavor (figs to be precise) and I was told that they don’t have the fig gelato as figs are not in season. Instead of throwing into the mix canned, frozen, or dried figs (or worse, some fake commercial flavors) and calling it “fig gelato”, they chose to hold off until figs were in season and used fresh. I was impressed!
When it comes to ordering gelato at Cremeria Monteforte, I have my tried-and-true trio that never fails to impress, however, it’s always difficult to choose when the eyes are bigger than the stomach!
First and foremost is their signature Rose Gelato, a flavor so unique and exquisite that I’ve yet to encounter it elsewhere. The delicate floral notes combined with the creamy texture make it an absolute must-try.
Next up is the Mango Gelato, which captures the essence of biting into a ripe, juicy mango on a hot summer day. Its refreshing tropical flavor is a perfect contrast to the richness of the other gelato flavors.
During fig season, I can’t resist indulging in their Fig Gelato. Made with fresh, in-season figs, it’s like biting into the fruit itself, with its sweet and slightly earthy undertones.
For another fruity delight, their Peach Gelato (Gelato di Pesca) is a standout. Each spoonful evokes the sensation of biting into a perfectly ripe peach, with its juicy sweetness bursting on the palate.
Of course, no visit to Cremeria Monteforte is complete without indulging in their Variegato all’amarena, a classic combination of cherry and vanilla that never disappoints. The sweet cherries complement the creamy vanilla base perfectly, creating a flavor profile that’s both comforting and indulgent.
If I’m in the mood for something a bit more simple that complements different flavors, their Stracciatella is always a favorite. The creamy vanilla base studded with chocolate chips is a timeless combination that’s hard to resist.
Beyond my personal favorites, Cremeria Monteforte offers a plethora of other tempting flavors to explore. From the rich and indulgent Mousse di Tiramisù, Nocciola (hazelnut gelato) or prefer something more adventurous like Gelato alla Menta e Gocce di Cioccolato (Mint and Chocolate Chips Gelato), or a tangy and refreshing Gelato di Limone (Lemon Gelato), Cremeria Monteforte has a gelato flavor for every taste preference.
And don’t forget to top it all off with a dollop of handmade whipped cream for the perfect finishing touch.
Where is Cremeria Monteforte located?
Cremeria Monteforte is both so easy to miss and a breeze once you know where to look.
If you’re facing the Pantheon, you’ll find Cremeria Monteforte tucked away on the right side of the monument across from the Taxi Station. Its modest exterior belies the extraordinary flavors that await inside, drawing discerning locals and in-the-know visitors seeking the ultimate gelato experience.
And to be sure: I do NOT get paid to sing praises to Cremeria Monteforte. I don’t even get a discount for being a repeat customer for 14 years and counting. The owner has no idea about my blogs but he knows what flavors I love! I simply wish to share with all of you looking for the BEST gelato in Rome: and I found it at Cremeria Monteforte.
Enjoy 🙂
